 3 day silver spoon forging workshop with Marcus Foley

 
 
 


Saturday 8th - Monday 10th June 2024 at
oneofftwo STUDIOS, Beechworth

Hot forging of silver is a lovely enthralling process applicable to both jewellery and silver-smithing, that dates back centuries and now you can learn the technique during this exclusive workshop conducted by skilled silversmith Marcus Foley.
The 3 day workshop will take place at oneofftwo STUDIOS, which is set amongst the beautiful gardens of Mayday Hills in the historic gold-mining town of Beechworth.
Marcus will lead the workshop by demonstrating all of the processes involved in hand forging a silver spoon, which include:

  • Spoon design principles - balance of handle to bowl

  • Hot forging the square silver billet, moving metal fast!

  • Cold forging or planishing to refine the surface and form

  • Initial filing and correcting the form prior to…

  • Doming the bowl!

  • Final planishing and filing

  • Preparation for polishing

  • Polishing and finishing!

Participants will then be guided in practicing the forging techniques in copper until comfortable enough to begin forging their silver spoon during days 2 & 3.

The workshops will run 9:30 till 4 each day and will be for up to 4 participants only.

We will provide:
- expert tuition in a calm and helpful manner at oneofftwo STUDIOS.


- all tools necessary, ie hammers, stakes, anvils, torches, files, polishing equipment.
- copper bar for forging practice.
- 925 silver bar @ $3.50 p/gr. of finished spoon(s), app $100 for 30gr. tea-spoon.
- requisite cuppas and a beautiful, relaxing environment.
- soup and/or ice-cream for spoon efficacy testing and celebration!

Please bring:
- not much, some spoon form ideas might be good, but not necessary.
- your good hammering arm! It will get used.
- Eye glasses if needed for your close-up work, safety glasses & ear-muffs if you favour them.
- bring lunch or you’ll have to quickly nip down to the cafes in town.

Please wear covered shoes and be prepared to tie long hair back.

For those of you looking for accommodation Beechworth offers a myriad of options.
Within the Mayday Hills parkland and only a short walk from our studio, there is a great little cottage and also the Grand Oaks Resort and the Linaker Art Deco Motel.
In Beechworth, 1km away, the options include motels, hotels, two caravan parks and many home stays or airbnbs.

If your partner is lucky enough to be traveling with you then they will have plenty to occupy their time whilst you are busy in the workshop.
Beechworth provides plenty of outdoorsy activities. From bush-walking and cycling, to lake and river fishing or gold panning and fossiking in the many creeks and gullies.
The cycling is truly stunning throughout the North East, whether on the road or in the forests, there is a surfeit of options from the brilliant alpine sealed roads to the gentle rail trails or gravel roads. And then there is of course the brilliant nearby MTB parks and trails.

If that all sounds too exhausting, then simply visiting the many award winning vineyard cellar doors for tastings or the many cafes and restaurants for indulging will keep them happy and sated.

So pack your car with all the gear for a wonderful experience!
